“Negotiate? Is that his way of saying he wants to make amends without actually saying it?” I asked hopefully.

But Lydia’s lips were pressed together in a grim frown.

“It means he has most likely found another prospective husband for Lydia to marry,” said Alessandro and I almost stood up and slapped him. The three of us occupied Luca’s office back at his villa, Lydia and I both sitting in leather chairs facing the desk while Alessandro paced about behind it. Luca had since excused himself to spend some one-on-one time with Olivia.

I shot an apologetic glance back at Lydia for Alessandro’s callousness but she simply nodded, her expression resigned. “That is most likely the truth,” she said. “He’s asked me to a meeting in Florence. Tonight.”

I swallowed. Tonight? That soon? Florence was about an hour’s drive from here. That left Lydia with barely enough time to shower and dress, let alone ready her mind for such an encounter. I barely knew Marco Calvetti – having only met him a couple of times – but what I did know about him was that he wasn’t an easy man to get along with. I shuddered at the memory of my last visit to Florence where I’d met him for the first time. He’d attempted to drive a wedge between me and Alessandro by hitting on me and implying that I was simply a passing fancy for Alessandro. He was a real creep and my skin crawled at the thought of him. But he was also the only father Lydia knew and as much as I wanted to weigh in on the matter, it was ultimately Lydia’s choice. But surely she wouldn’t succumb to another marriage demand from him. Lydia was stronger than that. She was a free agent with her own rights and desires. She was more than the pawn Marco Calvetti had brought her up to be.

“Lydia,” I said, pulling her into my gaze. “Do what’s in your heart. We...” I gestured between me and Alessandro. “Will back you in whatever you decide.”

She nodded, a smile twitching at her trembling lips. “Thank you, Lizzie. That means the world to me.”

Alessandro and Luca decided to accompany Lydia into Florence, part as moral support and part as a buffer just in case things headed south for Lydia and she found herself faced with her father’s foul temper. It was one of many reasons that Alessandro despised the man. They left with the promise that they would be back in no more than a few hours. They offered to bring back food since Luca’s housekeeper had Sunday afternoons off but I told them I would have dinner covered. Then, with a parting kiss I made Alessandro promise that he would look after Lydia.

That left just me and Olivia alone in the big house. I carried a tray of tea and biscuits into the living area after having rummaged through the well-stocked kitchen. I actually felt a little giddy at the idea of cooking for everyone tonight.
